Science test and pictures this morning! Routine was a bit off due to this.
We only had 30 minutes of math due to science tests and pictures. We refreshed our mind on adding with decimals. Please see yesterday's videos for more clarification.
In writing we revised our introductions by writing strong hooks, building characters/setting, introducing theme, and SHOWING instead of TELLING.
In reading we began going from organizer to essay with our August character trait pieces.

Happy Monday!
Today, we started our day with Ethan's recap of his football game and mini-dirt bike adventures from this past Friday. Great connections to character Ethan.
In science, we reviewed our last two application experiments and talked about the importance of reading the intentions of an experiment VERY CAREFULLY! So many silly mistakes were made because students did not go back to the description of the experiment. We then began to review for our science test on Wednesday. Parents- please sign the application experiments that are coming home tonight.
Math was all about reviewing place value. We recapped everything from lesson 1 to 8 in ways that made student combine skills and strategies. Today was tough, but it was great practice! Tonight's homework does not have a video or instructional tool with it- it is review! For those who want to check their accuracy or parents who would like to help their child, below is a link to some assistance for the mid-module.

In the afternoon, students received their next set of Greek and Latin Roots- "ject" meaning throw and "sect" meaning cut or separate.
Writing's focus was on finding theme in our own writing. We looked at the chapter of Wonder called Apples. Ask your child what theme is present in their own story. Ask them what their story is about and what their story is REALLY about.
In reading we started a character study of Auggie based on what we know of him so far. Students will support their character trait statements with text evidence, quotes and elaborations to prove why August could be described in the ways they have selected. Book clubs then met to discuss Day 8 and 9.

This morning began with a great football infused morning meeting from Dean.
After, we continued to apply our knowledge of controlled experiments to various situations. Applying our vocabulary is key! Parents, please look for these applications to be coming home Monday.
In math, we jumped into lesson 8 and continued to round numbers on a vertical number line. Students really seemed to grasp the application and understanding of rounding this way today! I am really proud of their focus and hard work.

This morning began with a morning meeting from Ivonna about her swimming experience in New Zealand.
We then took to the pod as a 5th grade unit to complete our plane controlled experiment. Ask you child what happens when all variables are controlled except for winds, and in another experiment what happens when you only change the weight of the passengers. Also, ask them how this related to fuel in real planes.
In math, we continued to round to specific digits. Again, homework help can be found here:

So sorry for not posting yesterday! I had to run out of school to a meeting at district office immediately after school and did not return to my computer until today! Hope you are having a great day off; the teachers are hard at work during their in-service day.
Yesterday we took the first NWEA in math. This gives us baseline data on each student in each of the standards of math. We will use this to guide small group instruction and enrichment.
In the afternoon, RELA took their second Greek and Latin root assessment. Those will be coming back tomorrow parents! Look for them!
In writing, we continued to ask ourselves what our story is "really" about as we dug out the themes in the narrative Eleven. We will apply the concept of finding what a story is "really" about to find the theme of our own narrative.
To end the day, we jumped back into Wonder. Some student's responses to their text evidence questions were shared from the day before. The goal was to follow RACER and really explain how your text evidence answered the question. Below is an image of what RACER is and some great examples of our responses.

Great football weekend for Mr. Garger!
Today began with our catapult launch. Fifth grade took off to the recess yard to check out some of our catapults. In first place we had Stephen with a 40 foot 4 inch catapult blast! Jacob and Thomas placed in second and third respectably. Overall, everyone who made a catapult really went above and beyond in science! Ask your child which variables were most important to catapult success.

After catapults we attended a robots assembly.
In the afternoon, we looked at what our narratives were "really" about by reading a mentor text and discovering its theme. Tomorrow we will apply this same concept to our own writing pieces.
To end the day, we completed our closed reading of Wake Me Up When September Ends, read the chapter with the same title, and then responded to a question about the similarities of both texts that required text evidence and quotes to support their answer.

Sorry for no post yesterday- we had some major issues with internet on my computer, but we are up and running today.
We received new seats today! Wooo!
In science we took our second controlled experiment quiz in which we analyzed an ice cream experiment with some hidden variables that needed to be inferred.
In math, we bounced into rounding numbers and decimals. This year, we will be PROVING everything that we do with models, so rounding definitely became a bit more complicated. I urge you all to watch the homework help videos to assist you in continuing to practice this skill that is VERY new to you.

For writing, students continued to draft in Google Docs. Themes will be built Monday!
Finally, the day wrapped up with our first close read on the poem/song Green Day song Wake Me Up When September Ends. When we finish close reading this text on Monday, we will continue to connect how this song relates to where we are currently at in Wonder.

Today began with a delightful morning meeting from Lucas.
In science we tested how different materials change the outcome of an experiment. We brought out boat lengths back to 3 cm. but this time looked at Styrofoam and plastic boats. Ask your child if these materials changed the outcome of the experiment. This was definitely a controlled experiment because we returned to the control group, but only changed the material this time. Everything else stayed the same.
Math's focus was on comparing place values and numbers.

In writing our story arcs began to take form as we organized our personal narratives. The emotions of the story also began to take center stage, so we will be focusing in on these emotions and themes tomorrow.
KidBiz3000 was on the agenda for reading. We gained some insight into grizzly bear protection by watching a quick video and sharing our ideas in Today's Meet. This is a website chat room that I do not usually show to students so early in the year, but we did a pretty good job of posting appropriately to it. This is a fantastic way to have all students share ideas and engage in a topic of curiosity.

Quick post today! Maddy lead a wonderful morning meeting today about her fear of heights and the Statue of Liberty.
In science we tested how the variable of height changes experiments. Two centimeter boats did not hold nearly as many pennies as 4 centimeter boats. Ask you child what that means about our variable that we changed today.
Math's target was to really make expanded form make sense. Please see yesterday's videos for help.
In writing we jumped inside the story to really SHOW what we were doing. Students picked their favorite list or draft and will be using that narrative idea for the rest of the marking period to create a high quality writing piece.
To wrap up the day, we looked at using text evidence to support answers to questions within a text. We connected this to book club homework and raised the bar for expectations. Here is a response that we created together for a question posed as we read Wonder. The expectation is that all students are able to write responses like this one by the end of this month. Restate the question, Answer the question, Include text evidence, Elaborate upon the text evidence and explain, Reread and check for clarity.

This morning began with Jacob telling us about his birthday weekend during morning meeting. Moo and Oh Wow Cow sounded delightful!
In science we set up our lifeboats experiment. We set up our control groups and found that about 17-20 pennies were needed to sink a 3 cm. tall paper cup boat. Tomorrow we will look at what height does to change the outcome of the experiment (one variable changing- controlled experiment).
Math's focus today was on expanded notation. We looked at both fractional and decimal versions of expanding standard form. Check out this video for more basic understanding and homework help.

In math we looked at connecting place value chart movement to moving within the metric system. Tough stuff! We will revisit this later in the year. Students took their Module 1, Topic 1 quiz which will be coming home on Monday.
In writing we took our first vocabulary test (which took much longer than anticipated). These will be coming home next Monday. We then jumped right into KidBiz3000 (you can find this on my website in the "Khan Academy, Study Island..." area. We will use this throughout the year in class and as homework to help students learn to read increasingly complex informational texts. Zach lead a fantastic morning meeting about turtle rock at his mountain house. Tons of character building there!
In science, we took our first quiz about controlled experiments. Parents- prepare to sign and return these- they will be coming home tomorrow.
Math's focus was reviewing lessons 1-3. We continued to examine exponents. Please see yesterday's videos for homework help.
Mr. Schmucker and Mrs. Smith came around this afternoon for a summer reading celebrations. Great job for those of you who continued to exercise your mind this summer.
Writing was all about SHOWING instead of TELLING today.
In reading we continued to analyze Auggie as a class. Auggie finally received his tour around the school and met some students. Ask your child how Auggie handled these social moments. Groups also broke down their group specific characters. To wrap up reading, we modeled how to have a "book club" meeting. This fine second week began with Lizzie leading our morning meeting. She did a great job greeting, telling a quick story and making connections to character building.
In science we continued to work with controlled experiments. Today we kept everything in our experiment the same, except we changed the mass at the end of our pendulum. Ask your child what we discovered when you ONLY change the mass in a pendulum.
In math, we continued to work with multiplying by powers of 10 across the place value chart and mentally by shifting digits.

Later in the afternoon, we reviewed our man/manu and ped Greek/Latin roots. We then continued to look at complete sentences in grammar.
In writing we began drafting our first version "flash draft" for First Times and Last Times that we have done something. These were FANTASTIC! Great first drafts of this year.
RELA focused on story elements as we began reading Wonder. Here are some questions to ask your child about what we read today- see how they respond!
pg. 12 Driving
August is struggling with the idea of attending school for the first time. He says, “I’ll be the only kid who looks like me.” Why is this particularly difficult for August?
Imagine the first day of fifth grade in a new middle school. Does everyone feel different and exposed in that situation?
pg. 13 Driving
Auggie’s Dad always makes him laugh. Is humor a way of coping with life? Is there someone in your life who makes you laugh when you are sad?
Finally, we wrapped up RELA by selecting our book club books for the first half of the first marking period. Students will receive these books and meet with their groups for the first time tomorrow.

This morning kicked off with a pod wide first week recap. As a whole, the teachers in 5th grade are really happy with the things we are seeing throughout 5th grade. We also gave some pointers on things that need to be "tuned up" heading into next week. The positives are heavily outweighing the negatives.
In science, we completed our first pendulum experiment. We gathered our "control data" that we will compare next week's controlled experiments against to see which variable is changing our experiment's results.
Math continued to look at moving along the place value chart. Please see yesterday's videos in math for homework help and deepening understanding.
We recieved our first vocabulary words of the year in RELA. Students in RELA plus will have to memorize 20 words (2 roots) per week. Here is a useful study tool to use when working with vocabulary root words:
PED QUIZ
MAN/MANU QUIZ
Writing focused on brainstorming "firsts" in our lives. A fire drill cut the lesson short, but we will flash draft our best brainstormed idea tomorrow. Here is my example of a snapshot that I shared about the first time I went backpacking on the Appalachian Trail.

In the distance, I could hear the
cackling howls of coyotes cutting through the nearly freezing midnight
air. I was awakened by the snarling
snores of my friend Dave, who lay only inches to my right. At the bottom of my sleeping bag, my toes
were numb and resembled tiny frozen hotdogs even though they were protected by
two thick layers of woolen socks. As I
lay chattering in my mummy bag, the thought of a pack of coyotes overtaking the
three of us danced through my partially dreaming mind. What would I do? What else could be out in the towering forest
around us? Would we make it to
morning? Could they smell our food that
sat in the maroon painted bear box that lay no more than 50 yards from our
makeshift campsite? The howls scampered
across the ridge, ever so slowly, until the final bark faded off into the
void. More thoughts and questions
stabbed through my consciousness, yet I faded back into the land of infinity.
Laying on
the deflated pad, my eyes slowly cracked open as light slipped into the tent
through the trees and blue nylon dome above me.
Left, right, left right, my head snapped back and forth scanning the
small indoor area we had created only 9 hours ago. Hovering in the air around me floated the icy
form of the moisture that once lived in my sleeping mouth. With each quick breath, more and more tiny
ice particles filled the frigid morning air.
The taste of fear still lingered in my mouth as a slow warmth of morning,
sunlight, and calmness overtook my body.
We had survived the first night in Worthington State Forest and with the
emergence of the sun, my confidence grew.
In reading we previewed our first marking period shared reading, Wonder. Students related to some of the big topics within the book, responded to some deep thinking statements that will be discusses throughout the marking period, and looked at vocabulary.

Today was our first day of full time switching, which means we are back to the grind! Full teaching of each subject took center stage today as you can see in the targets below.
In science, we explored controlled experiments and gathered vocabulary for our pendulum experiments that will be conducted next week. Tomorrow we will run the control group of the experiment.
In math, Eureka, our new pilot math program took center stage. In this lesson, we looked at moving around the place value chart. Each movement of a digit to the left resulted in it getting 10 times larger. Each movement of a digit to the right made the digit 1/10 as large as it previously was. We will continue to work through this lesson tomorrow. Below is some homework help. Both are great tools for helping you to excel so please check them out!

In the afternoon, our RELA class took on complete sentences in grammar. We then brainstormed by creating lists based on different types of events in our lives. The more specific, detailed, and emotionally connected you are to the event- the better!
We wrapped up the day by discussing main idea and theme as it pertained to artwork, poems, and a song. Below is "Wonder" by Natalie Merchant. Preview the video tonight as you do your homework if you like! It will probably help you to annotate if you hear how she sings and pauses within the song. Tomorrow we begin our shared novel- Wonder.

Sorry for the late post!
This morning, students knew the exact morning routine that needed to be followed. In morning meeting we looked at three character traits of successful students: Self-Control (the most important for 5th graders), Zest, and Optimism. Groups and pairs did a fantastic job thinking of slogans and 2, 3 and 4 letter definitions.
In science.... we observed our first science experiment... SHHHHHHHH! Do not tell those little brothers, sisters or younger students in the building- its surprise for when they are in 5th grade!!!
Today in math we took our first learning objective quiz to see what we will be learning in math this year. It was meant to be challenging- everything will be learned throughout this year! We always switched math classes for a quick tutorial of what to expect when we switch for real tomorrow.
In the afternoon we wrote our first mini-essay about gift giving and recieving. This will help me to see what type of narrative writers we have in our class and it will give students something to compare their final published essay against. Growth is key!
To end the day, we switched RELA classes to set expectations and get to know each other.

Happy 2nd day of school. This morning we dug deeper into how to conduct a morning meeting and we disected the character building words of GRIT and CURIOSITY. Students did a fantastic job creating 3 and 4 word catch phrases for each.
We continued to get to know the class with two truths and a lie, then dove into getting to know ourselves as learners by taking a multiple intelligence survey. A vast majority of us are natural/nature learners- a first year for that, but totally cool! Take a look at our class' representation of themselves as learners.
Later in the afternoon, we learned the procedures for reviewing morning work. Students then took part in writing a letter to themselves. This letter will be given back to them at the end of the year and they can see how much they have changed in one full year of school. We ended the day with 25 book goal expectation talk, and began reading our first read aloud- Blackwater. We will look to analyze the characters of this story as we continue to read tomorrow.
All in all, a superb 2nd day of school. Lets keep this excellence rolling throughout the week.
