In writing, students began to independently plan and draft their 2nd personal narratives.  This is an On Demand writing piece, so it should be a quick turn around- no more than 3 days.  This is their chance to improve upon their first narrative grades.

In reading Mrs. Smith joined us for our next installment of potbelly pig TDA work!

Wednesday November 18, 2015

Kyle ran through our morning meeting this morning.

In Social Studies we learned how to use an infographic creating website called Canva.  We will be making infographics about the adaptations of two Native American tribes.  We will dig deeper into this tomorrow, but students seemed really excited to show what they knew in a new way.

In math we continued to divide... long division!

In writing we focused on attention to editing and attention to the little details that help our narratives to flow.  The small things impact the big things!

To wrap up the day, we began to wrap up Wonder.  It is due Friday, along with a Wonder test on Friday!

At 10:20, we went down to the cafe-torium for an assembly from Joe Odhiambo.  He is a guiness world record holder for 5 basketball records.  His message was about character/believing in yourself and he showed that through the skills he was acquired throughout his years of training.

In the afternoon, narrative writing pieces wrapped up.  Tomorrow we will discuss editing since we have been revising with our partners as we write.

In reading, we looked at plot and story structure.  We mainly focused on the climax since we finally got into that part of the story!

Today began with ticket drawing.  Hooray for winners!  Also, hooray for the Minnesota Vikings!!

In social studies, we narrowed our research of Native Americans down to two cultural regions and began to compare/contrast them.

In math, we began dividing with number that have remainders.

New Greek and Latin roots!

Writing continued partner narratives and in reading we began the final chunk of Wonder.  To the nature reserve we go!

Friday November 13, 2015

Student council kicked off our morning with a presentation for the month of November.  Next Friday is "backwards inside out day" so please donate no perishable goods!  No coins this time.

In social studies we looked at the Pacific Northwest Native Americans to wrap up our five major cultural regions.  On Monday, groups will select two regions to compare and contrast adaptations.

In math, we looked at division estimation.  It follows less rigid rules than other types of estimation, so knowing multiplication facts is essential to seeing patterns in the numbers!

In the afternoon, we wrapped up TDAs.  Students did a really great job on these!  They should be proud of their group efforts.

To end the day, group narrative drafting in Google Docs was our focus.  Showing instead of telling is getting stronger!!!!

The reason we had math to start the day was because we had our A.L.I.C.E. assembly to inform us about what to do if intruders were to enter the building.  Students were very mature and receptive.

In the afternoon, we discussed joining Reading Olympics.  A book list can be found here: http://www3.bucksiu.org/cms/lib3/PA09000729/Centricity/Domain/49/2016%20Elem%20Reading%20Olympics%20Booklist.pdf

Ryan W lead our morning meeting today.  The boy is loyal to his Wilkes University football team!

Southwestern adobe living Native Americans were in the cultural region spotlight for us today.

In math, we continued to look at converting units of measure.

In the afternoon, TDA work continued with trifecta groups from each of the fifth grade classrooms.  Common themes ranged, but text evidence was always backing up their claim!  Tomorrow we will hopefully finish organizers and move onto the actual TDA writing.

To end the day, we studied the character Miranda and had a warm moment at the end of her part in Wonder.

Morning meeting- conference recap!

Native Americans- Plains!  My favorite cultural region.

In math we looked at converting smaller to larger units.  This involved fractions and division.

In reading we partnered up across grade levels to tackle a TDA.  One student from each of the 3 classes teamed up to partner write a TDA.  Today we read and annotated while thinking about the two story's themes.

To end the day, we looked at how to SHOW and not tell a suspenseful moment.  We used this moment in Monsters Inc. to practice.

Social Studies focus today: North Eastern Woodland Native Americans.  We looked at their climate, resources, food, housing, tools and clothing to make connections to the types of adaptations used to survive.

In math, we multiplied whole numbers by hundredth decimals.

SHOW, don't TELL mini-lesson was our focus today!  We also finished our story maps.  Tomorrow we will begin drafting our partner stories in Google Docs.

In reading we looked at similies and metaphors, compared them, and identified them in different Wonder sentences.  We read through the first half of Auggie's second part and left off at a pretty big cliff hanger!

Alyssa kicked off our morning meeting with some Just Dance stories.

Explorer projects came back- look for these coming home!  We then connected explorers to what was found in the new world- Native Americans!  We will begin our study on Native Americans and their adaptations as the week progresses.

In math, we multiplied whole numbers and decimals (to tenths) together.  We used an area model and standard algorithm to help us.
