Thursday May 8, 2014

Our morning began with a Latin root "bio" matching game.

bio = life

Quickly after finishing, we pushed science into the afternoon and brought writing to the morning (I will explain later).  Students continued to work on their special projects that will be shared this weekend.  Oh man are these looking good!

In math we learned how to find the area of circles and used the various records/vinyls hanging in the room to bring the lesson to life.  We compared the area of the sticker on vinyls to the area of the whole vinyl.  Super groovy math.

In the afternoon we wrapped up comparing and contrasting Joseph Martin and Sybil Ludington, two heroes of the American Revolution.  Text evidence rules even more than vinyls!

Next we began one of the largest science lessons of the year- filling the ecocolumns.  Groups observed crickets and isopods closely under magnifying lenses while other groups filled their terrariums and aquariums with isopods, crickets, elodea, duckweed, algae, mosquito fish, and snails.  Quite the afternoon but all eight ecocolumns are just bustling with symbiotic relationships!

With the last 15 minutes of the day, we read a bit of Where the Red Fern Grows.  4 opportunity blog is up for discussion at Mr. Garger's website.

And.... tonight is one of my favorite nights of the sports season- NFL DRAFT!!!
There are few picks in this year's first round that truly seem like first rounders to me.  There is a ton of great mid-round talent, but the top picks don't seem as exciting this year... Naturally we have the 8th pick in a draft like that.  If we take Bortles, I would like to see him ride the pine and get a bit more of experience before throwing him to the wolves.  I would also like to see Mack fall to us, but that is not happening.  I would be happy with a CJ Mosley type character at middle linebacker.  We shall see... Spielman did great last year, I would like to see it again this year.
