Friday January 29, 2015

This morning Luke R. took us through an igloo destroying morning meeting.

In science, we observed newspapers and magazines under microscopes.  Thank you to those of you who brought in high powered microscopes!

Which is the newspaper and which is the magazine?  The answer should be pretty obvious!

Math- Parts of a whole!

In writing we continued our research.  Big strides were made today!

As the day wrapped up, we prepared for our Socratic seminar by beginning to create and answer questions each text involved in the seminar.  Some FANTASTIC questions began to pop up.

Morning meeting- Mikey... until he had to go to band...

In science we learned about our classroom microscopes and looked at some microfiche under the microscope to learn how to focus and see a clear image.

In math, we looked at finding parts of a set.  This will eventually become multiplying fractions.

In the afternoon, we began researching our environmental issues.  Researching, as we learned today, is a long task.  Facts do not just jump off the page!  If any parents would like to help their child find and print out articles on their research topic, that would be wonderful!

To finish the day, we began reading our final Socratic Seminar informational piece.  Our focus was on why the facts they are telling us about rain forests are important to the preservation and protection of those same rain forests.

Wednesday January 27, 2015

For some reason I had a really bad blogging slump last week.  A huge MISTAKE on my part.  Please keep checking in; we will be back on track this week and for the rest of the year.

This morning we jumped right into Spanish class due to our two hour delay.

After, we moved past recess and instead retook our science quiz, and caught up on reading/owed work.

In the afternoon, writers partnered up with their Environmental Issue partners and began brainstorming/researching environmental issues.  Topics were decided and they ranged from acid rain to plastic in the ocean.  Ask your child what they will begin researching tomorrow.

To finish they day, we recapped our National Geographic article from Friday called "This is Your Brain on Nature" from the January 2016 issue.  Next, we looked at our next Socratic seminar text from Journeys- "Everglades Forever."  Tonight students will reread and fill in their trifold to help pull key ideas and details.

This morning Special Agent McCaa and Keslick came to talk with students about what it takes to be in the Secret Service!  What a unique experience this was!!  Ask your child what they learned about the Secret Service and future careers.

In math we continued to look at fractions from a division perspective.

Greek and Latin root test!  Opinion publishing continued after.  The hope was to finish these today, but the new goal is now tomorrow...

In reading TDAs for sea turtles were wrapped up.  Ask your child to see theirs on their Google Drive accounts.  They were pretty impressive!  Great use of cause and effect language.

Tuesday January 19, 2015

First,  I am so sorry for missing two blog posts last week Ticket drawing morning meeting.

Today began our first day of the science unit that we call Microworlds.  Observation is KEY!  Ask your child what they observed today and how it changed based on how we observed.

In math, we continued to look at fractions as division.

A recap from yesterday began our morning.  We also received new seats!

To begin the day, we reviewed requirements for the SotB assessment.  These will continue to be worked on over the next two days.

In math, we looked at how fractions and division are related.  We will continue to look at this topic over the next few days.

To finish the day, we gave Interrupted Journey a second read and focused ourselves on the cause and effect relationships in this informational narrative.  Our TDA partner question focuses on this same strategy in reading.  More cause and effect to come with a second reading tomorrow.

Abby kicked off a Shenandoah Cavern morning meeting.  Sounds awesome! I would love to visit Shenandoah one day for a backpacking adventure.

In social studies, we are now one day away from finishing Sign of the Beaver.

Math's focus was on multiple step fractional word problems with addition and subtraction.

In writing, we finished our chocolate milk opinion essays.  Wow was I impressed with these!  Two groups really nailed it, but all groups did a fantastic job!

To end the day, we introduced our strategy in reading for next week- cause and effect.  We read our first story that will work towards the partner TDA, but next week we will dive into our second read and really make some cause and effect connections.

Kylie kicked off our morning meeting with some junior Olympics gymnastics stories.  Very impressive!

Next, our Google Doc-ing continued in writing.  Some amazing first body paragraphs were written today that were extremely persuasive and showed great opinions backed up by facts.  Here is an example from one group!

Great job Jack, Lilly, and Jared!

After, we continued to look at analyzing complex adding and subtracting number sentences in math.  We will not have homework tonight, but here is a link to the lesson.

After our health class, we reviewed grammar and editing morning work, and moved along in Sign of the Beaver.  We will be finishing by early next week!

To end the day, students completed various KidBiz articles to challenge them on their lexile level in reading.  Growth, growth, growth.

Tuesday January 1, 2015

Blake lead a Star Wars based morning meeting.

Next we switched for writing.  Body paragraph writing was our goal.  We are in the process of writing body 1.

Then we switched for math.  In math we had a tough lesson based on rearranging an equation so that we could simplify our working process.  This will be continued tomorrow.  I will still post the videos, but homework is basic adding and subtracting fractions practice.

After lunch we had our health class.  Post health class, we did a bit of social studies and a bit of reading on KidBiz.

Monday January 4, 2015

Indeed, today was a great first day back!

We began our day by discussing our breaks.  After, we got our minds back on track by making goals connected to the character counts wall.  Great start to the day!

In math, we estimated answers and then used our knowledge of adding and subtracting fractions to check if our estimations were correct.

In the afternoon, writing groups wrapped up introductions in Google Docs.  Tomorrow we will begin body paragraph drafting.

Finally, to wrap up the day, we reviewed Cold Read tests and Text Dependent Analysis essays in reading.  We then selected our next book club books and went over expectations for this round.  It is much different than the last!
