Happy holidays!

This morning I was over at Richland Elementary for a meeting.  Students continued with Sign of the Beaver and took a fractions/mixed number quiz with adding and subtracting.

In the afternoon, we reset ourselves for 2016, cleaned our desks and gathered in the auditorium for a sing along.

I will not be posting tomorrow, so have a great break and holiday season!  Be safe and enjoy time with friends and family.  Also, thank you all for your gifts- super kind of you!

Finally, SKOL Vikings!  Big playoff push ahead!

Sign of the Beaver and ticket drawing started our day.

In math, we looked at adding and subtracting from whole numbers.  We first attempted to use number lines, which quickly became confusing, so we resorted to a more "static" way of adding and subtracting and students seemed to respond better.  For homework, they may use number lines or the traditional algorithm.

In writing, groups decided their side of the debate on chocolate milk, and then proceeded to organize their writing pieces.

To wrap up the day, RELA Plus began organizing their TDAs based on plot and setting.

Lob's Girl Socratic Seminars and Tuesday December 8, 2015

Here our our Lob's Girl Socratic Seminars.  The volume may be a little quiet, but its the best we could do!  Check them out.  What was really effective?  What could be improved upon next time?  What were you personal strengths?  What were your personal weaknesses?

This morning, Jacob kicked off our morning meeting with a story about his sister's birthday.

In Sign of the Beaver, Attean is becoming more familiar with the English language.

Math- adding with unlike denominators.

Writing's focus was on an article that put a positive spin on chocolate milk.  Research was gathered, opinions are continuing to be built.

Socratic seminars were wrapped up and reflected upon.  We talked about the strengths and weaknesses of this round.  The more we do, the better they will get; its a great way of combining reading and conversation making.

To continue in reading, we read Storm Warriors while focusing on making generalizations and coming to conclusions.  As this week continues, we will read another story, then begin a Text Dependent Analysis which will be wrapped up next week.

In writing we continued our chocolate milk research.  Tomorrow groups will break down and further their research (this will continue for a couple of days).  At the end of this time, groups will decide upon an opinion and we will go through how to write an opinion based essay that is thoroughly supported by facts and statistics.  Hopefully we will begin writing by Friday.

Socratic seminar in reading!  Oh yeah- a personal favorite of the students.  We had two very interesting seminars that touched on many of the big topics in Lob's Girl and Old Yeller.  There were somethings we need to tighten up as a class, but overall, the book discussion was detailed and text driven.  Impressive.  Look for the Socratic seminar videos to be posted within the next 2 days on this blog.

Math was all about standard multiplication algorithm today.  Students know how to do it, but there is a HUGE issue with multiplication facts, lining up place values, and adding efficiently.  If we could cut back on the silly mistakes, we would be flying through this!  If you child is still having issues with multiplication facts, I highly encourage you to get your child on REFLEX: https://www.reflexmath.com/
The username is: zgarger (or pwilson), select our year 15.16, and after they select their name from the list, they use their lunch code as their password.

In the afternoon, we reviewed our Greek and Latin roots with a matching game.  We then got together with partners to re-revise our narratives based on the feedback I provided.  The scores on the first round of narratives were quite low.  Many students neglected to use resources, apply strategies such as SHOW DON'T TELL, and disregarded publishing checklists.  We had a big discussion how this is a HUGE over site on many of their parts.  In our upcoming narrative, we will look to take steps forward.

Mrs. Smith joined us for reading and we continued to research pot bellied pigs.  In the past two lesson we learned how to support our opinion with facts and then elaborate in a focused way on them.  Awesome!

Before lunch, we had an unexpected fire drill.  A fire alarm was accidentally pulled, but we responded well and everything was just fine!  Great job class!

In the afternoon, 81% of the class received a 3 or 4 on their Greek and Latin root quiz for this week!  AMAZING!!!!!!  Now our next goal is 90% of the class.

In writing we continued to peer and independently revise.  I hope to have these writing pieces wrapped up by early next week.

In reading, we broke down the TDA that we were working on yesterday and partnerships did a MASTERFUL job of writing the next two body paragraphs and conclusion.  This seems to have really cleared up misconceptions about TDAs.  Our next round of these should be much stronger!  Great focus and use of text evidence!

Thursday October 15, 2015

Alana lead us through a fantastic morning meeting.

In social studies students received their geography quizzes back.  We also highlighted the explorer Vasco De Gama.

In math we took a quiz on multiplying and dividing, and worked on some long division.

In writing we continued to write our exploded moment personal narratives.

In reading we finished Part 2 of Wonder and began planning our in class TDA.  Parents, please be aware that the first TDA that is coming home in the next day or two is our baseline TDA.  Scores may be lower than expectations because students have never done them in RELA Plus before.  These scores are used, but they helped guide our TDA that we are working on in class together to set expectations.  We will compare our first TDA with our class TDA to see how things have changed.

This morning began with our student council voting!  Congratulations to Stephen and Kylie!  Maddy, Dan and Shane did a tremendous job preparing for elections as well.  You should all be proud!

In social studies we took our geography quiz, and then looked at expectations for our upcoming explorer project.

In math, we continued to divide with place value.  Today we learned what happened when we had remainders left!

Please see yesterday's post for LONG DIVISION assistance.

In writing we continued to revise for explode-able moments- WOW!  Was I impressed by some of these, here is an excerpt from Rachel's story.  She really SHOWS how panicked she was.

In reading, we took a look at plot and continued to read part 2 of Wonder which lets us see the story so far through a different character's eyes- Via, Auggie's sister.  Ask your child what new things you have learned about Auggie from this point of view.

Monday October 12, 2015

This morning began with Dan, Kylie, and Shane giving their student council speeches.  Tomorrow Maddy and Stephen will give their speeches, and voting will happen on Wednesday.

In social studies we continued to find out more about explorers and made a connection to today's holiday- Columbus Day.  Tomorrow we will have our geography quiz.  Study!

In math, students recieved back their Learning Target Assessment which covers all 5th grade standards.  So far we have only taught patterns, place value, and operations with decimal numbers.  Those 3 standards will count towards the marking period report card- the other standards were just to see where students stood so far in math.  Overall these were pretty strong!  Then we continued to use place value to divide.

In the afternoon, RELA reviewed their Wonder part 1 quizzes.  These would have been superb if directions were followed.  Some silly mistakes from people not answering questions fully!!  Overall, these were good.

Next, we analyzed our next set of Greek and Latin root words- "port" meaning carry and "miss'mit" meaning send.

"Port" Overview- http://membean.com/wrotds/port-carry
"Port Quiz- https://quizlet.com/1020270/greeklatin-root-port-flash-cards/
"Miss/Mit Overview- http://www.english-for-students.com/miss.html
"Miss/Mit" Quiz- https://quizlet.com/1020277/greeklatin-root-miss-mit-flash-cards/

Then we discussed the upcoming Part 2 and 3 vocabulary for Wonder.

To finish the day, students began their Text Dependent Analysis for their first round of book clubs.  We will finish this tomorrow.  The question revolved around finding a theme for their novel and using text evidence throughout to support it.
